Sweden takes European plunge

Article Abstract:

The prospects for growth in Sweden, if it is allowed to join European Union, are good despite the decline of the country's shipbuilding and repair industry. Sweden's shipyards and its marine equipment industries continue to possess a high degree of sophistication. Swedish marine engine makers such as Saab-Scania AB, Hedemora and Volvo Penta AB remain committed to producing state-of-the-art engines. The country's marine electronics companies voice out similar sentiments and are investing heavily on R&D to design new products.

Fighting back

Article Abstract:

The ship repair industry in the Netherlands and Belgium experienced several difficulties in 1995. The Netherlands had to struggle with a strong guilder which led to contract losses due to prices. Both countries also had to contend with competition from Poland and the UK and the cheaper labor contracts offered by former eastern bloc countries. The industry had to resort to restructuring to survive.
