Risk perception of common consumer products: judgments of accident frequency and precautionary intent

Article Abstract:

Education systems to enlighten people of consumer product risk are necessary. People were asked to gauge product-related injuries at different paces. Risk level was assessed quickly and correctly, the latter not being related to the pace. Perceived injury severity was related to interviewee's risk estimates and intent ratings.

The relative contributions of injury severity and likelihood information on hazard-risk judgments and warning compliance

Article Abstract:

Safety communications should focus on injury severity rather than the likelihood of being hurt. Research on perception of product hazardousness shows high severity warnings produced high hazard ratings. Injury likelihood produced no effect.
