Sample security

Article Abstract:

Taking fuel samples during bunker fuel deliveries provide added security to the shipowners in case of fuel-related problems. A good method of getting fuel samples can provide the evidence needed in case of litigation. One of the available devices for fuel samplings include Jiskoot's AQL sampler, the only one certified for ISO 3171 compliance. The other fuel samplers include Kittiwake's dip sampler and Mar-Tec's fuel-flow driven sampler that is made according to ISO standards but is yet to be certified.

Case lost through contract fudge

Article Abstract:

The Singapore High Court ruled that Portserv Ltd, the owner and operator of Lok Maheshwari, is not liable to pay Sunly Petroleum Company, a bunker supplier in Singapore, for fuel transferred within Singapore Port Limits. Judicial Commissioner Choo Han Teck said Sunly could not sue Portserv for the simple reason that the latter owns the vessel. Sunly arrested Lok Maheshwari when Portserv refused to pay nearly $38,000 it billed for fuel supplied on Jan 12, 1997.

Speedy steering gear transplants

Article Abstract:

Ulstein Frydenbo replaced the ram-type steering gear of its 10,300 dwt reefer vessel, Dole Africa, with a rotary vane unit. The installation, which was completed within 72 hours, was done faster by mounting the Frydenbo gear on a fabricated foundation. The unit was secured through the use of a block and wedge system. The speedy process enabled the company's Antwerp, Belgium, operator Dole Fresh Fruit Co to avoid replacement tonnage.
