Scrap subsidies and ships but not yards

Article Abstract:

Danish shipyards are confident that they can compete in the world market even with the abolition of subsidies because of their expertise and experience. They claim that their improved production techniques and designs can ensure their survival until the next two years when a market upturn for new orders is predicted. The revival in the world's orderbook is seen to occur because of the ageing global fleet, new safety regulations and a lesser surplus tonnage than in the 1980s.

It's a difficult business: from some yards, survival is a tougher task than for others

Article Abstract:

The Danish shipbuilding industry has been adversely affected by variations in shipbuilding subsidies in the EC and increases in the value of the Danish kroner. These factors have combined to make Danish shipyards less attractive to ship owners than foreign shipyards. Despite such difficulties, shipyards such as Odense Staalskibsvaerft A-S, Danyard A/S and Aarhus Flydedok A/S remain confident that they can survive in the highly-competitive international shipbuilding market.
