Next generation of geared bulkers unveiled

Article Abstract:

Dalian Shipyard has delivered the second 28,000 dwt. Fantasy class multipurpose cargo vessel to Clipper Frontier Shipping Co. in Apr. 1996. Designed by GTR Campbell, the vessel features a stern wake equalizing duct that reduces vibration and enhances energy savings by 4-6%. The double-skinned vessel is powered by a Dalian-MAN B and W 5S50C main engine and has space for 1,130 TEUs, including 12 refrigerated containers. The vessel was designed specifically to dock in secondary ports that do not have cargo handling facilities.

Hatchless and post-panamax designs continue to develop

Article Abstract:

The two trends in container ship designs, hatchless vessels with continuous cellguides and hatchless or fully enclosed post-panamax designs, are described. Hatchless vessels, which are more appropriate for smaller ships, are seen to proliferate in feeder services because of the substantial cost savings they bring. The post-panamax designs with hatch covers are projected to be adopted more widely in large containerships.
