Service experience refines designs

Article Abstract:

MAN B og W Diesel A S and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. depend heavily on customer feedback to modify their future marine engine product lines. MAN is conducting service tests on the piston rings, cylinder frame and liner and exhaustive valves of its 4T50MX marine engine. Mitsubishi was able to solve corrosion problems in its UEC 75LSII low-speed, two-stroke engine after a shipowner complained of large-scale wear on the engines piston rings.

Stuffing box solution

Article Abstract:

Piston gland leaks may be controlled by employing synthetic sealing rings that reduce friction while giving performance equal to that of their metallic counterparts. Piston gland or stuffing box leaks or failures started with the introduction of long-stroke engines which increased the amount of scavenged air pressure. Using the new seals involves machining a worn rod to create a perfect fit and retrofitting costs from $1,800 to $9,600.
