Taking crisis out of drama

Shipping companies need to implement effective crisis management schemes that will reduce the impact of accidents on the operation of a vessel. Such schemes should involve the extensive training of the crew and the use of reliable information systems. The onshore staff should also be involved in the implementation of crisis management programs.

Vancouver, Canada-based Rydex Industries Corp. created the concept of public hub communication systems in 1992. In 1993, the company inaugurated the first operational public hub communication system. The system reduces satellite communications costs since it could be accessed through earth stations linked to public networks.
