Software enhances engine design

Article Abstract:

Ricardo Consulting Engineers has developed a highly versatile software capable of performing complex finite volume fluid dynamics computations called the Vectis. The program is especially suited to developing and evaluating engine designs. It features six modules covering pre-processing, equation solving and post-processing. Users can define the density and alignment of the Cartesian global mesh produced by the software and may even sequence events to achieve accurate process simulation.

Risks reduced through machinery redundancy

Article Abstract:

The Redundant Ship Machinery Consortium believes that having redundant power generation, propulsion and related systems can significantly minimize the risk of machinery-related ship casualties. Studies conducted by the organization reveal that, at least for tankers, the ideal redundant configuration should consist of twin-screw, twin-rudder and twin medium-speed engines fitted with CP-propellers and large primary shaft generators.
