Software suppliers seek increased integration

Article Abstract:

Computer software suppliers such as Senermar and Kockums Computer Systems are upgrading their CAD/CAM software packages to allow standard data transfer methods and greater integration among shipbuilders. Senermar's Foran program has a dedicated database for structural modelling, machinery adn pipework layout that can be integrated with other systems. Kockums, on the other hand, is trying to develop an open system aside from upgrading its Steerbear and Autokon programs.

Satellites show deficiencies in charting systems

Article Abstract:

The global positioning system (GPS), a three-dimensional digital mapping navigation system, is considered as far superior to paper charts. Paper charts provide a distorted view of the globe because of its flat form while GPS gives consistent, meter-accurate coordinate information. Another basis for comparison is the difference between datum systems. GPS, however, yields gaps in coverage when satellites are temporarily out of service.

Modern satnav systems determine precise position

Article Abstract:

The mechanics of the US global positioning system (GPS), touted as the navigation system of the future, is described. The system can provide precise coordinate information in three dimensions, but requires good signals from at least three satellites to get an accurate position reading. GPS has several limitations, though, such as satellite positioning errors, tropospheric delays and clock errors.
