Spain prepares for non-subsidised future

Article Abstract:

The Spanish shipbuilding industry faces numerous challenges as it prepares to eliminate shipbuilding subsidies. Increased competition in the global market has forced many Spanish shipyards to reduce their labor force and adopt new infrastructure and investment policies. The government has helped by liberalizing Spanish shipbuilding contract regulations. The decline of the Spanish peseta after its entry into the European Union has also helped reduce labor rates, making Spanish shipyards more attractive to foreign shipowners.

Safety in diversity

Article Abstract:

Many shipyards in Singapore have begun to accept newbuilding contracts to cope with the slumping shiprepair market. Singmarine, Hitachi Zosen and Jurong are some of the shipyard companies that have become involved in newbuilding, giving Sembawang Bethlehem Private Ltd., the best-equipped shipbuilding company in Singapore, some stiff competition. The strength of Singapore's currency is expected to have some effect on the ability of some shipyards to win orders.
