Laser hybrid welding, a development in the cutting technology, uses a YAG laser combined with an arc system to offer high penetration welds with minimal heat input and it has a high welding speed. ESAB and Permanova in Sweden are developing laser-aided MIG/MAG welding systems for a number of applications including the shipbuilding industry.

Call for action on effects of PVC

The danger posed by the use of PVC for the interior accommodation of ships that produce noxious gas in case of a fire is discussed. Accordingly, a leading supplier of halogen-free ship interiors has called for the banning of the use of PVC in the interior accommodation of ships.
