Noboa takes on its first 'green' reefer

Article Abstract:

The Noboa Group took delivery of Albemarle Island built using ammonia in the refrigeration plant, by Danyard, a Danish shipbulder. Anhydrous ammonia is the only designated alternative to CFCs in refrigeration. This has lead to increased interest in the use of ammonia, although some believe that other new systems will be developed. The automatic cargo refrigerating plants were supplied by Sabroe Marine who modified the design of the brine cooler to reduce the amount of ammonia required.

Coagulant gels hydrocarbons

Article Abstract:

Russia's St. Petersburg Research and Production Assn. has developed a new class of chemical compounds which can cause hydrocarbons with permittivities under 8 to coagulate into stable gels. The compounds, dubbed 'structure converters,' are non-toxic and can form gels within a 15-min. period at temperatures between -70 and 70 degrees celsius. Up to 50,000 tons of the product will be produced annually and will be marketed under the brand name Ecogel.
