Wanted: 'Compleat' Vendors

Article Abstract:

Suppliers are expected to be quality-oriented. Purchasing managers want product quality as well as quality of technical service and delivery. Quality in terms of value and vendor information system is also important. Purchasing relations with suppliers must involve information sharing. Some companies have vendor days in which suppliers participate in discussions with purchasing personnel. Experiences at a variety of companies with good supplier/purchasing relations are described.

Managers are pressuring purchasing personnel to improve and study the management function. Purchasing managers are responding in a variety of ways. They are giving more responsibility to field buyers. They are working more closely with other departments and meshing their strategy with that of their corporations. They have been trying new set-ups in attempts to schedule as well as purchase items. The experiences of purchasing managers at a variety of companies are described.
