Potential for improved performance

Article Abstract:

A study undertaken by MAN B&W and Ashland's Drew Marine Div showed that fuel homogenizers improved the overall performance of a ship's fuel plant. Two benefits were cited. These were improved combustion efficiency and sludge reduction and improved fuel efficiency. Homogenizers contributed to efficient combustion by creating smaller particles which can be sprayed by injectors into finer droplets. This translated into better vaporization and more complete burning of fuel. In addition, the homogenizer's emulsifying effect on water found in fuel eliminates the need for temperature caps.

Sludge: in the tank or in the engine

Article Abstract:

The use of homogenizers to reduce sludge in ship engines does not eliminate the necessity of having a centrifugal separator in an engine. This was one of the main findings cited by Alfa Laval to back up its claims that treatment systems for heavy oils are essential to the reliable performance of a ship's engine. The independent studies showed that the combination of a homogenizer and filter removed 20-30% of the particles but the particles ended up in the sludge tank due to the filter's back flushing.
