Tonnage increases in Southern Europe

Article Abstract:

Ferry operator Attica Enterprises of Greece has upgraded its services with improvements on its two new roros, "Superfast III and Superfast V." The new vessels will be faster and feature improved bow and stern loading systems. Other Mediterranean operators such as Grimaldi Group of Genoa, which plies the routes between Sardinia and Palermo, have expanded service routes and have added new vessels to their fleets. Ferrimaroc has bought a 22.5 knot ship with a passenger capacity of 2,300 as support for its service routes in Almeria, Spain and Nador, Morocco.

Life after duty-free

The lifting of the duty free concession has led to some ferry operators experiencing a significant drop in on board passenger spending. They are seeking to make up this shortfall by introducing new products in their shops or raising ticket prices.

Issues concerning ferry operators in Greece and Italy are discussed. Attica Enterprises and Strintzis Lines have merged to form an operation with a fleet of 16 vessels. Italian firm Grandi Navi Veloci is planning to open new routes.
