Trends in road safety process: the Greek traffic system

Article Abstract:

Greece has the highest number of road accidents among European countries. An analysis of the fatal accident data from 1963 to 1990 shows a correlation between the increase in the number of motorcycles, older vehicles and mopeds from 1980 to 1985 and the increase in the level of annual fatalities. However, improvement measures initiated in 1986 showed a decrease in the trend. The study suggests the strong influence of government policy on road safety and on road accident prevention.
