Article Abstract:

Stowaways pose several legal problems for ship charterers and owners, with containers being the favored mode for illegal boarding. Several stowaway cases have led to the intervention of international courts, resulting in considerable time and monetary losses. Masters should follow International Maritime Organization guidelines upon the discovery of stowaways, such as determining the point of embarkation, preparing a statement on all relevant stowaway information and establishing identity and citizenship.
