Wasting away

Article Abstract:

Ballasts of double-hulled ships need to be properly coated against salt water to prevent corrosion from setting in. A number of companies manufacture alternative marine coatings that have replaced the traditional but environmentally destructive tar epoxies. Royal Chemicals of the US makes semi-hard coatings of asphalt which requires UHP hydro-blasting, a black base coat and grey top coat 150 microns in thickness. Leigh Paints of the UK produces paints with lower VOCs which also require UHP hydro-blasting of ballast tanks.

Extending coating lifetime

Article Abstract:

The method of enhancing the coating lifetime of the ballast tanks is discussed. Identifying imminent catastrophic coating failure is vital, various techniques and mechanistic models are developed to enable a clear and quantitative assessment of the remaining useable ballast tank lifetime to be reached.

Anti - fouling by shark's skin

Article Abstract:

Researcher Anthony Brennan and others at University of Florida are researching on elements present on shark's unique scales for developing an environmentally coating for hulls of ocean-going ships that prevent the growth of aggressive marine algae and may also help to impede barnacles.
