Article Abstract:

The use of composite materials in marine drive shafts and couplings has gradually increased in the shipping and boatbuilding industries due to their superior characteristics in comparison with steel shafts. Composite drive shafts offer users advantages over traditional steel shafts such as reduced weight, elastic flexibility and easiness in handling and installation. The use of lighter shafts in commercial ferries can also mean reductions in operational costs in terms of saved fuel consumption and increased payload capacities. Applied Composites, Turboflex UK and Geislinger have developed composite drive shafts for naval applications.

Article Abstract:

The Canary Islands ship repair and conversion industry has been adversely affected by the break-up of the Soviet Union and the dim economic situation of the shipping industry of East Germany, Romania, Eastern Europe and Cuba. The shipyards such as Astilleros Canarios SA, Astilleros de Tenerife and Reparaciones Navales Canarios SA the have to compete with one another and compensate for the loss of their traditional customers by tapping business from US and European ship owners.
