Airtours bolsters FTi's out-of-school activity

Article Abstract:

Airtours has been the driving force behind rapid expansion at German travel group FTi, according to Managing Director Dietmar Gunz. The former company purchased a 29% stake in FTi in 1998, and has the option to make a full takeover by 2002. FTi initially sold educational trips to German schoolchildren, but has now become the country's fourth-largest tour operator. It is soon to challenge C&N, TUI and LTU in their core mass markets of Greece, Mallorca, Turkey, the Canary Islands and other popular Mediterranean destinations.

German sales stall as economy hits buffers

Article Abstract:

Many consumers in Germany are choosing not to book holidays a long time in advance, and the sector will see turnover growth of only 3% at best in the 1996 season, according to ASR, the independent travel agents association. Many people are opting for last-minute, cut-price holidays, and this has led to falling profit levels for travel agents. Market leader TUI has seen a rise in demand for holidays in Italy and Turkey, while interest in Tunisia and Greece has declined.

STW shuts as boycott bites

Article Abstract:

Wigra Expo, organiser of the STW Swiss travel trade fair, has stated that a second event will not be held because of a very poor response from tour operators. The event attracted only 370 trade visitors, compared with estimates of 2,000, and some of the 423 exhibitors demanded a refund of their expenses. Some tour operators have decided to remain loyal to the TTW show, which is to take place in Oct 1996.
