Logging towns and the great timber meltdown

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists, county supervisors and timber interests in Quincy, CA, have succeeded in formulating a forest policy which is acceptable to all sides. They have developed a management plan for 2.5 million acres of federal land in the Plumas and Lassen National Forests. However, this success highlights the controversy evident in many timber-dependent communities. At the state level, Gov Pete Wilson appointed a 9-member Board of Forestry, which lowered the limits on clear-cutting from 120 acres to 20-30 acres, increased the logging buffer zones and instituted sustainable-use requirements.

Condors return to Arizona

Article Abstract:

The efforts to reintroduce captive-reared California condor chicks in northern Arizona have been successful in the recovery of these endangered species. These condors are raised at the breeding facilities, and at the age of 3 to 4 months, they are transferred to a pen where social bonding is promoted and aversion training is given to make them avoid power lines. These birds are monitored through wing markers and radio transmitters after being released.
