In the fast lane

Article Abstract:

The number of ten pin bowling centres in the UK has increased fourfold to 197 in early 1993 from 45 in 1986, and the market has shown strong growth in real terms, increasing more than twofold from 1988 to 1993, according to research by Mintel. Of all adults in the UK, 10.4% took part in the sport in 1992 compared with 2.1% in 1985. The future for an industry which has performed this well during a recession looks bright, and it offers a relatively cheap evening out for participants.

Service industry

Article Abstract:

A recent survey of local authority leisure provision in the UK looked at issues including sports management contracts, leisure cards, GP referral schemes and future developments. It was found that DSOs have 295 contracts in England, 31 in Wales and 45 in Scotland, with most DSO bids not being opposed. Leisure management contractors have far fewer contracts, and this sector is dominated by the leading companies.
