Deregulation gets new name

Article Abstract:

The UK's Deregulation and Contracting Out Act 1994 allows existing regulations to be altered with support from the Deregulation Unit without recourse to primary legislation. The leisure industry has effectively used the law since its inception, with changes to gaming and liquor laws. The new Labour government has renamed the unit the Better Regulation Unit, signalling its belief that not all alterations should be relaxed. The unit has released a policy document setting out its ideas of good practice and containing policy objectives. It is to be hoped that the new guidelines will ensure that existing regulations are enforceable.
