Ferry sales soar after tunnel fire

Article Abstract:

The fire on a freight train in the England-France Channel Tunnel on 19th November 1996 led to the temporary closure of the tunnel for passenger services and caused sales in cross-Channel flights and ferries to soar. P&O European Ferries reported an increase in bookings of 55% on the Dover-Calais crossing and Air France completely filled its Paris-London flights compared to a previous average occupancy of 77%. It is thought that the fire has not affected public confidence in the safety of the tunnel which should re-open within three months.

Caribbean aims to stay calm through the storm

Article Abstract:

Passing on the benefits of tourism to the local population is one of the main aims of Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) secretary general Jean Holder, who would like to see cruise ships increase island spend while reducing pollution. Holder is concerned about potential tourists being deterred from visiting the Caribbean region because of the devastation caused by hurricane Georges in September 1998. Over 2.3 million Europeans visited the Caribbean region in 1997, with 850,000 coming from the UK.

'Little extras' make all the difference on fees

Article Abstract:

Travel reservations system Amadeus maintains that extra features added to its booking system will help travel agents justify the proposed charging of management fees. The Amadeus Pro-Tempo system, used for booking flights, accommodation and car hire, has two levels of operation. Experienced operators can decrease the time taken to make bookings by entering airport and airline codes. Amadeus is working on a replacement system for Pro-Tempo and is also to launch a cruise booking service.
