Kenya returns to hunt for tourists

Article Abstract:

The Kenya Tourist Board has launched a campaign to win back the tourists which Kenya lost due to fears of violence, natural disasters and health problems. Tourist numbers went down to 558,000 in 1996, compared to 729,000 in 1990. The campaign, which will concentrate on Kenya's traditional markets in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK and the US, will include advertising in the more sophisticated magazines, educational trips for travel agents and closer co-operation with tour operators. The government is also to address the internal issues which formed the basis of tourist fears.

So where does all the money go? (EU tourism funding)

Article Abstract:

The European Union has been criticised for not spending enough on tourism, although overall spending that is not categorised under the heading of tourism is quite high. Spending in other EU programmes such as regional development is difficult to track due to the way funds are channelled. The European Tour Operators Association wants more money to be spent on promoting tourism to the continent.
