Bermuda's independence referendum

Article Abstract:

Bermuda's voters overwhelmingly rejected a bid to gain independence from Great Britain, with only 25.6% of the voters favoring the move. Black Premier John Swan Swan, leader of the United Bermudian Party, called for the referendum, although his own party was divided on the issue. The opposition's boycott of the referendum resulted in only 58.8% of the people casting votes. Sir John Swan resigned and a white Premier David Saul took over the government. Frederick Wade, the leader of Bermuda's other major party, the Progressive Labour Party, favors a slow approach to independence.
