McDonald's orders suppliers to improve hen's lot

Article Abstract:

McDonald's Corp has ordered its egg suppliers to implement improvements in how they treat their chickens, otherwise it will no longer do business with them. The company, which buys approximately two billion eggs a year in the US for its breakfast meals, insists that suppliers stop withholding food and water from chickens to increase egg production and have bigger battery cages for hens. These demands were made to serve as concessions for activist group, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, which agreed to impose a one-year moratorium on its 'Unhappy Meal' campaign against McDonald's.
