Mutual lack of assurance

Article Abstract:

Municipal Mutual Insurance's (MMI) financial problems are likely to result in large premium increases for local authorities. On Oct 1, 1992 MMI suspended claims payments for five days and refused new business. The company was set up specifically to help local authorities in the 1900s. However, diversification into mortgages and home insurance in the 1980s and an unprecedented number of claims have caused difficulties. About 90% of local authorities have benefitted from MMI's low premiums but new premiums are likely to be 40% higher.
