The Black Country Museum

Article Abstract:

The Black Country Museum, Dudley, West Midlands, England opened in 1978. It is a purpose-built open-air museum depicting traditional life and work of the area. Industry, architecture and social life are depicted in approximately 26 acres of former wasteland. Costumed demonstrators offer live interpretation. Authenticity is assured by the transportation and reconstruction of traditional buildings. The underground coal mine exhibit is the only replica in the museum. Leisure attractions have been incorporated as the emphasis is on education and recreation.

Exploratory & Techniquest

Article Abstract:

The Exploratory in Bristol and Techniquest in Cardiff are science centres specialising in interactive exhibits or 'plores.' The working exhibitions are stimulating for children between eight and 14 and school parties account for about 1/3 of the visitors. The centres have proved more popular than traditional museums and attendances have increased annually. Capital investment is necessary for continuous development to prevent the exhibitions becoming stale.
