On the ball

Article Abstract:

Women's hockey is thriving in the United Kingdom but receives less recognition than men's hockey. The sport is financed by Sports Council grants, corporate sponsorship and membership subscriptions. About 950 clubs are members of the All-England Women's Hockey Association but only Ipswich has its own synthetic pitch. Most teams compete with men's hockey for use of facilities. Scarcity of pitches in some areas necessitates extensive travel. National television concentrates on men's hockey although some regional networks support women's hockey.

Euro golf

Article Abstract:

A perceived need for golfing facilities has resulted in a proliferation of European developments. Farmers are creating courses from set-aside land. Hoteliers are incorporating courses for image enhancement. However, the increased interest in professional golf has not been accompanied by increased amateur participation. Some new courses have failed due to poor market research. Recession has limited golfing membership. Developers need to provide reasonably-priced golf to encourage new-comers to the sport.

The arc of the golf ball

Article Abstract:

The economic recession is preventing the development of many golf courses whose sites were chosen without sufficient market research. Strutt & Parker research reveals 13 out of 25 approved golf course planning applications in Surrey and Hertfordshire 1989/90 remain undeveloped. Developers are carefully scrutinizing sites and locations before committing themselves. The greatest demand is from the starter market, therefore developers are targeting high turnover pay and play golf in these areas.
