Summer musings

Article Abstract:

The leisure industry hopes that new national heritage secretary Virginia Bottomley will continue the policy of her predecessor in promoting integrated leisure management structures. There is now growing awareness of the advantages of cultural services being as integrated as possible, and a recent report from the Association of District Councils recommends a holistic approach, bringing together the past, present and future. There is already a move among new Unitaries in England and Wales to establish integrated leisure departments.

Dark clouds on the horizon

Article Abstract:

Investment in leisure services has been cut in real terms in 1995/96 by 33% of districts, more than 50% of London authorities and 75% of metropolitan district authorities, according to the AMA/ADC 'Survey of 1995/96 Local Authority Leisure and Tourism Budgets.' Many have been forced to make job cuts, reduce service levels, increase prices and close facilities. Even where spending has been maintained, service levels are falling. This is having a negative impact on staff morale and customer relations.
