Workers' rights

Article Abstract:

Two European Commision directives aim to improve employment conditions and should be supported. The 'Directive on the protection of young people at work' aims to prevent exploitation. It covers minimum working age and limits hours. It recommends two consecutive days off and four weeks holiday. Workers under 18 will be banned from night working. Recommendations in the 'Directive on the organisation of working time' may conflict with leisure industy needs but exemptions may be possible. However, the United Kingdom has not signed the Community Charter of Fundamental Rights of Workers.
