Sustainable tourism comes under scrutiny

Article Abstract:

The UK government is to undertake a study to assess the importance of sustaining the tourist trade by way of management or development projects. It is hoped to build on the success of the UK tourist industry by developing ideas which promote individual locations, such as bicycle hiring facilities, which reduce traffic and are environmentally friendly. The scheme was launched by Tourism Minister Tom Clarke in April 1998. The government wants to work in partnership with those in the industry to attract higher numbers of visitors to the UK.
