Article Abstract:

Maintaining a focus on conservation and the environment must be the first aim of aquarium operators, who have to balance commercial interests with marine protection. Limiting animal stocks to those which have a special appeal to humans may have a detrimental effect on other wildlife. Innovation and technological advances have allowed the construction of very large aquariums, such as the $107 million 5,400 cubic meter Ring of Fire Aquarium in Japan which recorded visitor numbers of 3.2 million from 1997 to 1998.
