Swiss World Airways folds after barely three months

Trouble with raising the $2 million it needed to take care of its immediate bills has forced Swiss World Airways to go out of business. The decision comes barely three months after the airline's first flight. Swiss World Airways was founded by private investors to serve the Geneva-New York route, but was able to sell only a quarter of seats on average. It launched its maiden flight on Sept 10, 1998.

JAL takes international approach

Japan Air Lines (JAL) is seeking links with European carriers in order to help it increase its presence in Europe. It is adding a number of European flights to its schedule, and is devising a joint marketing strategy with American Airlines, which which it has linked its frequent-flier programme. London is the airline's most successful European route in terms of revenue.

The European Regional Airlines Association (ERA) was formed in 1989, and currently 40 million passengers fly with ERA members each year. The association is continuing in attempts to raise awareness of regional airlines and the fact that they operate to the same technical standards as larger carriers.
