Article Abstract:

One speaker at the the Swim 98 Conference and Exhibition suggested old methods for teaching children to swim were outdated. It was pointed out some 1.6 billion pounds sterling was required to maintain swimming pools already in use. The National Lottery Sports Fund awarded 25 million pounds sterling for swimming pools annually. The problem of meeting the swimming needs of a multicultural society were discussed at one of the workshops. A sports coach called for children not to specialize on one stoke or distance too early in their swimming career. The conference was held in Sheffield, England.
