Taking the strain: advice on sports injuries is becoming more sought after by customers of health clubs. The Sports Council has surveyed needs and awareness in the southern region

Article Abstract:

Sports Council (Southern Region) research shows that there is limited awareness of sports medical provision in the southern region and it has identified areas where improvement is needed. A survey of sporting clinics and representatives from several sports found that there was no lack of sporting clinics, but waiting lists were long and treatment expensive. There was found to be practically no physiotherapy and medical services available at training events and competitions. There are plans to introduce a directory listing sports injury specialists and clinics.

All girls together: women are an important market to capture, so what do they want from a club and what motivates them to exercise regularly?

Article Abstract:

The number of women pursuing fitness is expected to rise by 15% between 1995 and 2000, according to a report Women Keeping Fit, by New Leisure Markets. Women represent for 42.5% of participants in jogging and they are morely likely to use a fitness facility than men. However research shows that women often find sports and leisure facilities unwelcoming and unfriendly, and they are concerned about lacking in skill or fitness. Facilities should therefore provide larger changing areas, more circulation space, and choice of equipment is also important.

Under contract: total facility management is becoming increasingly important

Article Abstract:

There is a move towards total facility management whereby specialist companies now offer a total service to owners. Gardner Merchant, previously a specialist contract caterer, is now to operate the non-curatorial elements of the Royal Armouries attraction, and Ogden Entertainment Services, a US company, now provides the City of Anaheim with a package looking after the financial and design aspects of the Anaheim Arena.
