The campaign for leisure: Blackpool hosted ILAM's annual conference last month

Article Abstract:

The 1993 ILAM conference was held at Blackpool with the theme Campaign for Leisure. It concentrated on the arts, parks, sport and tourism and the changes facing the industry. Alan Barber, chair of the ILAM Parks, Open Spaces and Countryside Panel, called for attention to neglected urban parks and the setting up of a national agency. Ken Robinson, vice-chair of the Southern Tourist Board, urged all to contribute to the promotion of tourism, and Sue Campbell, director of the National Coaching Foundation, spoke of the power of sport in offering personal fulfilment and development.

Tourism package

Article Abstract:

The EC Directive on package travel, package holidays and package tours must be implemented from 1 January 1993 by EC member state. The Directive does not just apply to foreign travel, but also domestic leisure and tourism, and defines a package, meaning that consumers will be protected. It will make organisers legally liable to customers for all parts of the package, and states that customers should know who is responsible for the package. The Directive also ensures that any price increase is shown in the contract.

Cracking the pop code

Article Abstract:

The UK Health and Safety Executive produced draft guidance on safety standards for outdoor events in November, 1991. Leisure professionals have welcomed the 'Pop Code' but consider it does not go far enough. It fails to address management of indoor events or discos. Guidance also neglects Crown immunity in Royal parks. Differing standards applicable to occasional and regular events have caused confusion. It has no statutory authority.
