Canadian aboriginal tourism development: assessing latent demand from France

Article Abstract:

Latent demand from France for touring of Canadian aboriginal attractions has been assessed. A method for assessing latent demand was developed and tested Native products and services are of interest in France, with some variation in different markets. France is a major market for Canada. Native groups see tourism as a way to build new meanings and strengthen old values in traditional practices. They realize potential for damage exists. The economies of many native communities are remote, narrow and resource-based, and aborigines hope to diversify and strengthen them.

Study tours: a model for 'benign' tourism?

Article Abstract:

Study tours from Community Aid Abroad/One World Travel Tours 'travelwise' tours have been studied as a model for a more benign form of tourism. Study tours might encourage more responsibility/sensitivity to host community needs. The model has value, but is limited in its applicability. Wider acceptance might come from a different marketing approach that would make people feel like travelers, not tourists. Negative impacts have been attributed to tourism and several diagnostic models and corrective measures have been proposed.
