Gearing up for competition

Article Abstract:

The Greek government is determined that the country will qualify for European Union membership by 2001, and for this reason is promoting privatizations, deregulation, competitiveness and labour market reform. The private sector has become a key engine of economic growth, and future expansion will be in the formation of large alliances. The natural preference of the Greeks for working independently is proving a restraining force in the formation of new alliances and large companies.

Research and trends in governmental accounting and reporting

Article Abstract:

Governmental accounting and reporting are essential in safeguarding the utilization of resources by public administrators. Misleading governmental reports, however, may be the norm if necessary checks are not applied. The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) was founded to assure the public of consistency between government reports and agency activities. GASB standards are expected to raise the quality of governmental accounting to the level of business auditing.
