On May 08, 493 the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Laurentius of Siponto at Monte Gargano, Italy. The cave where he appeared became a shrine, with a church dedicated to the Archangel built above. Monte Sant' Angelo has been one of the great pilgrim shrines of Europe for 15 centuries. It has been consecrated by popes and saints. Normans met the exiled Lombard noble Melus there and fought with him for Lombard independence. Their leader Robert Guiscard was invested with the duchies of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily in 1053.
