Article Abstract:

During the U.S. Civil War, when it was becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to obtain European gunpowder, Colonel George Washington Rains was given the daunting task of developing a domestic gunpowder. He chose a site in Georgia for the location of the powder works because of its temperate climate, its lime- and salt-free water supply, its proximity to a labor supply, and its easy access to necessary natural resources.
