Partnerships: new directions

Article Abstract:

The US Office of Consumer Affairs (USOCA) has formed a partnership with the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges (AACJC) to create consumer education programs integrating colleges and businesses. A survey of higher education administrators was conducted regarding the need for consumer-related courses. Three-quarters of the 408 respondents said their colleges already offer such courses; 71% felt such courses were important; and courses are already being offered through 81 college divisions, primarily business, continuing education, and community services. The majority also acknowledged that funding for such activities was in short supply. However, J.C. Penney Co Inc recently awarded a $90,000 grant to the AACJC, which will award minigrants to colleges desiring to develop programs in consumer economics, credit management, and consumer law, among other related areas.
