Adolescents and Illicit Drug Use

Article Abstract:

Research on the most effective means of diagnosing, treating and preventing drug abuse among teenagers is desperately needed. Drug use by teens has increased since 1992. Drug use in early adolescence can interfere with intellectual, emotional, and social development and can lead to psychiatric disorders and delinquency. Tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana are still the most widely abused substances, but there has also been a dramatic increase in the use of harder drugs, such as heroin, amphetamines, LSD and methamphetamine. Many teens abuse inhalants such as glue, paint and solvents.
