Utopia, NJ

Article Abstract:

Free Acres in New Jersey is a township founded in 1910 by a New York lawyer who believed that land should be taxed as the single source of public revenue, and formed an association with a clause that the land should not be sold or mortgaged. There are no streetlights, fences are forbidden and zoning codes are more to unite than distinguish, and while some residents want Free Acres to change and become more like other towns, others feel it should remain unchanged and retain its uniqueness.

All that buzz

Article Abstract:

A tiny Asian pest called the Varroa mite threatens the existence of honeybees in New Jersey, and consequently crops, since honeybees are the only controllable source of pollination necessary for the cultivation of most crops in the state. New Jersey's official apiarist Paul Raybold surveys the damage and identifies infested colonies that can be treated or destroyed, and shares his expertise with farmers and interested beekeepers through his lectures on honeybees.
