Expo opening will confound doubters

Article Abstract:

Emilio Cassinello, a career diplomat, is responsible for the Expo 92 celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas which opens on Easter Monday. A new 1,310-acre city, Expo City, has been built near Seville beside the Guadalquivir. There are four pavilions exploring the age of discoveries and 100 country pavilions. Tickets cost 4,000 pesetas (22 pounds sterling) and 18 million visitors are expected. The British pavilion presents technological achievements and portrays the British as affectionate, open and forward-looking. The Spanish government estimates the cost of Expo to be 200,000m pesetas (one billion pounds sterling) excluding general improvements in the Andalucia region.
