63,000 Entrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

Great Britain and France have both started programs which allow the unemployed to use their unemployment benefits to begin their own businesses. This has resulted in 63,000 companies which would not have been there without this program. The policies in the United States, however, run completely contrary to this; any person receiving unemployment who tries to seek training or create their own business will lose their benefits. Perhaps, instead of pursuing such counter-productive policies, the United States should follow the example set by France and Great Britain, and treat the unemployed as potentially productive members of society, and not like outcasts. Studies have indicated that there are simply not enough jobs for all those seeking jobs, so maybe we should let them create their own jobs. Although there are no guarantees about how well the program would work here, it certainly makes more sense to allow someone to try and be self sufficient, rather than to force them to remain dependent on protesting taxpayers.
