1996 Young Scientist Award - extension sponsor: Mallinckrodt Veterinary, Inc

Article Abstract:

Randy Shaver completed his B.S. degree in Dairy Science at the Pennsylvania State University in 1981. He earned his M.S. degree from the University of Maryland in 1982. His research work was on the use of buffers in dairy cattle rations and the effects of silage pH on silage intake. He was able to complete his doctorate degree in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. He was proferred the Second Mile Award in 1991 by the Wisconsin County Agents Assn. and the Educator of the Year Award by the Wisconsin Forage Council. He is currently the Director of the Midwestern Branch of the American Dairy Science Assn.

Article Abstract:

Jim L. Nelssen received his B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1978 and his M.S. degree in Swine Reproductive Physiology in 1980 from Kansas State University (KSU). His Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition from the University of Nebraska in 1983 was supervised by Dr. Austin Lewis. His exemplary research work is characterized by a unique blend of basic and applied research and an interdisciplinary approach to solving research problems. He is currently the Director of the Segregated Early Weaning and Growing-Finishing Swine Units at KSU.
