Combined effects of diet and cold exposure on insulin responsiveness to glucose and tissue responsiveness to insulin in sheep

Article Abstract:

Sheep exposed to thermoneutral and cold environments and fed with high-concentrate and high-roughage diets were studied to determine the combined effects of diet and cold exposure on insulin responsiveness to glucose as well as tissue responsiveness to insulin in sheep. Results of the experiment show that glucose metabolism increases with cold exposure due to increasing demands in the peripheral tissues. It was further shown that diets can manipulate insulin responsiveness and action in sheep exposed to cold.

Palmitate metabolism by isolated sheep rumen epithelial cells

Article Abstract:

Rumen epithelial cells were isolated from the rumens of mature an neonatal sheep and investigated as to their ability to oxidize palmitate. The results showed that rumen epithelial cells can oxidize palmitate and can use it as a substrate for ketogenesis. Palmitate oxidation capacity appeared to be developmentally regulated, as epithelial cells from mature rumens were able to oxidize palmitate at higher rates than epithelial cells from neonatal rumen.
