A bitter-sweet beginning

Article Abstract:

The taste-receptor cell-specific G protein, gustducin, is prominently involved in transmitting both bitter and sweet taste sensation. Specially bred mice subjected to gustducin knock out are unable to sense both these tastes. Gustducin is closely related to the transducins, which activate phosphodiesterase in the vision phototransduction pathway. The taste deficits in mice are examined using behavioral two-bottle preference tests and electrophysiological response monitoring of the chorda tympani nerve to taste stimuli.
